Hands-on with Nikon Z 70-200mm F2.8 S. Nikon's just-announced Z 70-200mm F2.8 S looks like a powerful option for Z-series photographers, joining the Z 24-70mm F2.8 S as the second part in Nikon's 'holy trinity' of F2.8 zooms for Z mount. We got our hands on an early working sample at CES.

The Nikon Z 28-75mm F2.8 offers a variable minimum focusing distance of 0.19m (0.63ft) at 28mm, 0.22m (0.73ft) at 35mm, 0.3m (0.99ft) at 50mm and 0.39m (1.28ft) at 75mm, with a maximum magnification of 0.34x. This enables you to capture some fairly good close-up shots when shooting at the 75mm focal length.

We paired the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f2.8 S with a Nikon Z7 running the latest version 2.0 firmware, and the lens acquired focus reasonably quickly. It is generally accurate throughout most of the
The 24-70mm f/2.8 S, while the fifth lens to sport the S badge, is really the start of something new in the Z lens lineup: truly professional caliber lenses, with high performance and extra features. Even a cursory examination reveals some of the features: integrated display, a Lens FN button, and a third (programmable) ring.

The Z 24-70 f/2.8 has benefits beyond simply a faster aperture. It's optically better than the f/4, but the f/4 is still excellent. The f/2.8 is useful for a shallow DOF you can't achieve with an f/4 lens. It is a faster lens, which will help with some low light situations.

When the NIKKOR 17-55 f/2.8 came out, a lot of photographers I knew were a bit surprised that the new DX lens was larger and heavier than the full-frame AF-S Zoom-NIKKOR 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED. However, in all fairness, it was smaller and lighter than the enormous AF-S Zoom-NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8D ED-IF lens that it was designed to replicate on DX The NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8 joins the recently released 28-75mm f/2.8 and 17-28mm f/2.8, rounding out the trio of ideal upgrade lenses for those looking to take their creativity to the next level. The new NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8 is approximately 40% smaller when compared to the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8, but offers a similar versatile focal range

The Nikon Z 14-24mm F2.8 S completes the company's Z-mount trinity of bright, high-quality zooms. Alongside the Nikkor Z 24-70mm F2.8 S and Nikkor Z 70-200mm F2.8 VR S, Nikonians can now zoom from a 14mm wide-angle to a 200mm telephoto with no gaps in coverage and with a bright F2.8 maximum aperture throughout.
(If you happen to pair this lens with the Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8, its strongest focal length is 24mm, at which it outperforms the 14-24mm f/2.8 in the corners; so, between the two, use the Z 24-70mm f/2.8 if you’re trying to pick one at 24mm). For comparison, here is the manufacturer-provided MTF chart:
That’s where the Nikkor Z 24-120mm f/4 S lens comes in, offering a good compromise between a broad focal length, a fixed aperture, the promise of superior image quality and a reasonably travel-friendly size and weight. At £1199, it doesn’t cost too much more than the 24-70mm f/4, and about half what you’d pay for the 24-70mm f/2.8.
First, the 24-120mm f/4 S is a bigger lens than the 24-70mm f/4 S. For casual walk-around use, that does tend to make a bit of difference. I found myself having to watch from bumping the front of the lens into things while walking about, particularly if I had left it in the telephoto extended position.
